Longmont Startup Week: Government Grants as Sources of Non-Dilutive Capital

This session will cover Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants, as well as Colorado Advanced Industries Grants. The Small Business Research Innovation Research program is a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development that has the potential for commercialization. The Advanced Industries Export Grant is a Colorado financial assistance program for aspiring and current exporters in Colorado's advanced industries (Aerospace, Bioscience, Electronics, Energy and Natural Resources, Infrastructure Engineering, Technology and Information, and Advanced Manufacturing). Participants will go away learning the requirements and process for applying for each type of grant , as well as tips to increase the chance for award and possible errors to avoid when applying. This session is most appropriate for existing and early stage businesses.

Presenter Bios: Ed Kase has been focused in strategic marketing and business development for more than 20 years, helping companies understand market conditions and implement go-to-market strategies. His expertise includes commercialization of government-funded technologies, with particular focus on the SBIR program. Technologies include software, medical devices, scientific instrumentation, aerospace systems, and pharmaceutical technologies. As Advanced Industries Senior Grant Manager, Katie Woslager works directly with early stage and start-up companies, Colorado Research Institution Technology Transfer Offices, and Advanced Industry stakeholders. She oversees all Early Stage Capital and Retention Grants, Proof of Concept Grants and Infrastructure Grant contracts. Katie joined the Office of Economic Development and International Trade in 2013. Prior to this, she spent seven years with the Utah Division of Arts and Museums where she oversaw grants and contracts for various nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Colorado Small Business Development Center Network is partially funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
