Topic: Cybersecurity

Description:

In February 2013, President Obama signed Executive Order 13636 which outlined responsibilities for Federal Departments and Agencies to aid in Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity. A year later the Cyber Security Framework was released detailing the 16 critical infrastructure sectors whose assets, systems, and networks, whether physical or virtual, are considered so vital to the United States that their incapacitation or destruction would have a debilitating effect on security, national economic security, national public health or safety, or any combination thereof. One of these sectors is the Defense Industrial Base.

The Defense Industrial Base Sector is the worldwide industrial complex that enables research and development, as well as design, production, delivery, and maintenance of military weapons systems, subsystems, and components or parts, to meet U.S. military requirements.

In 2016, NIST released Special Publication 800-171 "Protecting Controlled Unclassified Information in Nonfederal Systems and Organizations". This document helps commercial organizations that are part of the supply chain, identify where they need to implement controls to meet requirements. In the past, the government relied on self-attestation for compliance from vendors and manufacturers.

In the past year, the government has developed the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) process which will measure an organization cyber security maturity level for compliance. The intent of the CMMC is to combine various cybersecurity control standards such as NIST SP 800-171, NIST SP 800-53, ISO 27001, ISO 27032, AIA NAS9933 and others into one unified standard for cybersecurity. In addition to cybersecurity control standards, the CMMC will also measure the maturity of a company's  institutionalization of cybersecurity practices and processes.

The presenter will provide updates at to where the CMMC is and what you can do to prepare for it.
